Seven Remodeling Trends to Watch for 2014

January 2, 2014

Zero Entry Shower & Wall Mount Sink PhotoThinking of remodeling your home this year? Want to know what some of the hottest remodeling trends of 2014 are? Kenny’s Tile has scoured the Internet and consulted our interior designers to create this list of Kenny's Tile Remodeling Trends for 2014. This list includes the latest trends encompassing everything from color to lifestyle. Here are the top seven to keep your eye on when deciding what to choose in your home:

ShowersPay special attention to your bathroom when remodeling. Curbless or zero entry showers are becoming very popular. This trend not only makes the shower feel more incorporated into the room, but has the added advantage of being easily accessible for elderly folk. Overall, a spa-like design with clean lines and minimalist décor is taking hold. Luxury touches like waterfall faucets and heated floors will be popular.

Flex Rooms and Multi-Generational Designs - Wall mounted sinks for wheelchairs, walk-in bathtubs, raised countertops, and motion sensing faucets can make life easier for those with older parents moving in with them. Converting a bedroom to include a sitting area and bathroom makes stays more convenient for guests and can double as a mother-in-law room later if need be. If you’re adding a room, consider creating a separate entrance.  You can supplement your retirement income by renting out the space when you’re older.

Kitchens – kitchens are going glam and showing a bit more personality. Look for more elaborate cabinetry, rich jewel tone colors, accents of shiny metal, and unique lighting fixtures. Fewer cabinets, replaced by floating shelves and open spaces, will provide room to hang wall art and other more personal items that reflect your taste.

Techie Tweaks – with more and more electronic devices playing a part in our daily lives, electrical outlets are changing to keep up. U-Socket wall plugs have two USB ports replacing the usual three pronged outlet at the top of typical wall outlets.

Color Trends – blue is going to be popular in 2014 specifically cobalt and navy. Orchid makes a comeback as well. Overall, brighter colors are making a comeback, so if you’ve always wanted to make a splash, now’s your chance. One design tip, however, is since colors fluctuate dramatically when it comes to trendiness, choose non-permanent areas to enhance color – walls, accent pieces (rugs, pillows, lamps) rather than countertops, cabinets, carpet, etc.

Drama and Glamour – white walls will be considered boring. Dramatic darker colors including navy and black will reign supreme. These deeper, bolder colors will be showing up in wallpaper, fabrics, furniture, and accessories. Metallic accessories will complement these shades and bring a glamorous touch as well.

Eco-Friendly Floors and Cabinets – flooring and cabinets with no added formaldehyde and non-toxic glues, binders, and finishes will rise in demand. Also, bamboo and other sustainable woods will become more popular.

Of course, the most important thing to remember when remodeling is to make sure any changes fit your lifestyle. Just because a trend is popular, it doesn’t mean it’s right for you and your family.
