Five Fabulous Backsplashes for Your Kitchen

January 28, 2013

If you want to add some flair to your kitchen, one of the easiest design elements to update is your backsplash. And when you combine Kenny's selection of tile with our exceptional design services, we can create any backsplash you can dream up. Backsplashes have come a long way from the drab, utilitarian backsplashes of yesterday. New choices in materials have expanded the backsplash choices from average to artistic. With all of the choices of materials available, there’s sure to be something that fits your style and your budget. Here are a few examples just to whet your appetite.

Stone has entered the kitchen in both countertops and backsplashes. It is available in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and textures, making it easy to create a unique pattern for your specific backsplash.  Travertine, slate and granite are all popular types of stone.

Glass is the most recent trend to dominate kitchen backsplash designs today and with the large variety of sizes, shapes, and colors available, the sky is the limit when it comes to design. From simple white subway tile to intricate and colorful glass mosaics, you can create a backsplash that becomes the show stealer in your kitchen.

One of the nice things about tile backsplashes is that they allow you to create a focal point in your kitchen. Here, the rectangular box carved out by framing an area with coordinating strip tiles and filling the center with a third size and shape of complementary tile creates a design element that draws the eye to the area above the sink. That area would otherwise have remained plain and nondescript. Notice how the small square tiles accent the larger diamond shaped tiles where they intersect. Although basically monochromatic, the addition of all of these visual details create a much more interesting palette for the eye.

It’s easy to infuse a little color into a backsplash by simply adding a strip of similar tile that is different in shape, size, and color. Another trend is to add small elements of a totally different material, perhaps a metal like copper, stainless or bronze throughout the design. Manufacturers are creating decorative medallions, listellos, and more to keep up with designers’ demands.

Small glass tiles create a visually appealing backdrop in this kitchen by incorporating all of the surrounding colors from the countertop, cabinets, floor and even accessories. The earthy colors chosen here, create a calm and cohesive look that still retains life and personality.

There have never been more choices in materials for backsplashes - natural stone, glass, porcelain, ceramic, metal, resin, beadboard, and the list goes on. Now is a great time to redo your backsplash, but be warned, you may want to start researching your choices early to give yourself time to narrow them down.
